The research program of the Institute of Horticulture - National Research Institute covers all issues related to horticultural production. The scope of activity concerns research on the biological basis of fruit, vegetable and ornamental plant production, as well as biotechnology, genetics and creative breeding of horticultural plants, as well as agrotechnics, phytopathology, entomology, nursery and protection of horticultural plant genetic resources, cultivation of edible mushrooms, processing and storage of fruit and vegetables, food safety, agroengineering, economics and marketing. Due to the fact that most horticultural plant species are pollinated by insects, beekeeping is of great importance. The unit conducts research on beekeeping, apiary technologies, quality of bee products and plant pollination.
The Institute of Horticulture – National Research Institute implements projects at the national and European level, financed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the National Science Centre, the National Centre for Research and Development and the Ministry of Education and Science, as well as from the European Regional Development Fund and the European Smart Growth Funds.
As part of the implementation of international research projects on genetic resources of vegetable and fruit plants, the Institute actively participates, among others, in the creation of the European Core Collection of vegetatively propagated species of the genus Allium, conducts extensive cooperation with scientific centers from the European Union, the United States, Canada, China and Eastern European countries. It is a member of many international organizations and associations, such as: the International Society of Horticultural Science (ISHS), the European Association of Cultivated Mushroom Producers, the European Weed Research Society.
