Skierniewice, November 24, 2025

The official opening of the laboratory and greenhouse complex of the Horticultural Plant Breeding Department of the Institute of Horticulture – National Research Institute took place in Skierniewice on November 24, 2025. The investment was implemented as part of the National Plan for Reconstruction and Increasing Resilience (A2.4.1), which supports the development of public research infrastructure in the plant breeding sector.

The new facility significantly expands research capabilities for the creation and improvement of horticultural plant varieties. The laboratories are equipped with modern equipment, and the entire facility is complemented by environmentally friendly solutions, such as photovoltaic panels and a water retention system. These will enable high-quality research while respecting the principles of sustainable development. The investment will contribute to increased stability in horticultural production, improved crop quality, and better environmental protection.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Stefan Krajewski, as well as a broad range of representatives of central and local government, the scientific community, and industry organizations. Guests included representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Infrastructure, representatives of the Łódź Voivodeship, the district, and the city and commune of Skierniewice. The event also brought together numerous experts, practitioners, and partners collaborating with the Institute, as well as current and retired IO-PIB employees. This broad representation confirmed the significance of the investment and the role the Institute plays in the development of Polish horticulture and the region.

The complex was consecrated by Father Dr. Grzegorz Cieślak, parish priest of St. James the Apostle Parish in Skierniewice.

The substantive portion of the event included a presentation of the history of the Horticultural Plant Breeding Department and a discussion of its goals and upcoming challenges. During the presentations, it was repeatedly emphasized that the Institute of Horticulture – National Research Institute is a key institution in the research and evaluation of new varieties of horticultural plants, valued both for its scientific achievements and its contribution to the development of the region. Attention was drawn to the need to maintain a high pace of development, "so that others have to chase us, rather than us chasing them."

The investment was also emphasized as an example of responsible use of EU funds, translating into innovations that benefit the economy and society. The solutions implemented were assessed as modern and internationally competitive.

The new laboratory and greenhouse complex is an important step in strengthening the Institute's position as a leader in horticultural plant research and an element in building modern, resilient, and knowledge-based horticulture in Poland.
